Description

During the past two (2) years, the Borough of Denver worked with members of the Fairview Cemetery Association to plan for the future of the Fairview Cemetery, located at 101 North 4th Street, Denver, and the Fairview Cemetery Annex, located at 1180 Steinmetz Road, Denver.  On Tuesday, July 28, 2020, ownership of these two (2) cemetery properties was transferred to the Borough of Denver and the Borough now takes responsibility for overseeing the maintenance and care of the cemeteries; capital improvements; the sale of lots and graves at both cemeteries; and the coordination of internments at the cemeteries.

The Borough of Denver recognizes that its municipal cemeteries are sacred grounds reserved as a final resting place for the deceased.  It is the desire of the Borough to operate and maintain cemeteries that are beautiful, dignified, and an appropriate resting place for departed love ones.

 More Information

Cemetery Association

The Borough of Denver has established a Cemetery Association consisting of three (3) voting members appointed by Borough Council and who serve as an advisory body to Borough Council.  The Cemetery Association shall perform such studies as shall be requested by Borough Council and may provide recommendations upon its own motion relating to issues concerning the operation of the Cemetery.   The Cemetery Association may advise the Borough on capital improvements for cemetery purposes and for funding for such improvements from the permanent lot care fund.

The Borough administers the cemetery functions including the sale of burial lots and the coordination and scheduling of internments through the administrative staff,  For additional information, please contact Joan High, Office Assistant, at 717-336-2831, Ext. 6.

Perpetual Care Fund

In the past, the Fairview Cemetery and Fairview Cemetery Annex were cared for from the proceeds of lot sales, service charges, and donations.   In 2020, the Borough assumed responsibility for the cemeteries through a transfer from the Fairview Cemetery Association. In order to assure a more reliable means for permanent care, the Borough has established a Perpetual Care Fund (“the Fund”) to provide maintenance of the cemeteries. This Fund is maintained in part by fees received from lot sales.

The amount set aside into the Fund from each lot sale will vary from time to time as determined by resolution of Borough Council in accordance with the provisions of the Borough Code. The Borough shall maintain a record of the amounts deposited and expenditures made so that the operation of the cemeteries shall be paid from the Fund and shall not become a general expense of the Borough. The Fund may also be increased by gifts, bequests, a portion of memorial charges, and other service revenues.

Resources

The cemeteries owned and operated by the Borough are governed by the Borough of Denver’s Code of Ordinances and the Fairview Cemetery and Fairview Cemetery Annex Rules and Regulations.
